Joining the recent slew of anime premieres in America is Waki Yamato’s Taishō era manga, Haikara-san: Here Comes Miss Modern. Eleven Arts Anime Studio announced that Haikara-san: Here Comes Miss Modern Part 1 will screen at multiple theaters nationwide starting on June 8, with a simultaneous release in Canada. Most screenings will be in Japanese with English subtitles, with some theaters offering an English dub of the movie. Originally, the movie was released last year in Japan. Part 2 of the movie will premiere this fall.
If the characters look similar to Penguindrum, it’s because they share the same character designer, Terumi Nishii. Nishii is joined by other talented veterans such as Michiru Oshima, Kentaro Akiyama, and Kazuhiro Wakabayashi. The team adapts the story of a Taishō era romance between Benio Hanamura and Shinobu Iijuin, who struggle with their own demons and overcome their differences after being forced into an arranged marriage. Because Hanamura lost her mother at a young age and was raised by a single father, she grew up as a tomboy with an outlandish personality and is considered to be an “unusual” a lady of her time.
